Hurricane Preparation Information for Online Students
Unfortunately, the state of Florida is strongly impacted by hurricanes. Though you may not live in the Florida area, it is important to be aware of how your fellow students and instructors may be affected during and after a significant storm.
Keep current with Florida’s weather related events by checking Florida Community College ’s Alert webpage: http://alert.fccj.edu/.
If it appears that you may be in the path of a storm or be affected by it, inform your instructor of the possibility that you may be affected by a power outage, or having to evacuate.
If you know there is a hurricane headed your way, print out any upcoming assignments, and other course documents you need. Work with your instructor to request permission to complete assignments in advance. In addition, if your course requires proctored testing, talk to your instructor about coordinating any changes in your testing schedule.
In the event that you are without power for an extended period of time or need to move to a different location, consider other options for accessing your course on a computer, such as a friend’s house, the local library or community college, and, if in the Jacksonville area, any of the Florida Community College at Jacksonville campuses/centers.
Rather than feeling as if you need to withdraw from or drop the class, talk with your instructor about the possibility of completing as much work as possible and obtaining an Incomplete in order to finish the course.
Please keep in mind that your instructor may also be affected by the storm and may not be available or able to respond immediately due to their power outage or evacuation situation.
